The ARK Invest Active Approach: Top-Down and Bottom-Up Research

          Top-Down: Ideation

ARK’s research and investment team initially examines from the top-down how the world is changing and where it is headed. To understand quickly changing innovation themes, ARK employs an open research ecosystem to gather information, both helping to define and refine its internal research process.

          Top-Down: Sizing The Opportunity

Through extensive research, ARK forecasts long-term market opportunities, modelling cost curves and demand elasticity to pinpoint disruptive technology entry points. From this, companies emerge as leaders, triggering our detailed bottom-up analysis.

          Bottom-Up: Stock Selection And Valuation

ARK’s bottom-up analysis focuses on a select group of potential investments, eschewing benchmarks. Investments are evaluated based on crucial metrics and a detailed five-year revenue model, encompassing unit growth, cost reduction, market penetration, and future projections.

          Bottom-Up: Portfolio and Risk Management

ARK monitors the investment thesis of holdings weekly, adjusting holdings to exploit market shifts or to realign to conviction levels. We monitor expected growth rates and thesis risks closely and may trim or sell a company if our long-term investment thesis has changed materially.
